Syllables as Linguistic Units?

چکیده

While there continues to be a debate in linguistics and speech processing as to the nature of an atomic unit, in computational approaches the atomic unit is universally taken to be the orthographic, space-demarcated “word”. We argue that for many richly inflected languages such as Indo-European languages, syllablebased approaches together with semantic grounding may provide certain advantages. As a demonstration, we consider a language-acquisition system for Hindi, and propose a text syllabification technique, and show that syllable-based models perform somewhat better than the traditional word-based approach in building up a noun lexicon based on unannotated commentaries on video. We suggest further exploration of this potentially important idea in other domains.

Acoustic markers of prominence influence infants' and adults' segmentation of speech sequences.

Two experiments investigated the way acoustic markers of prominence influence the grouping of speech sequences by adults and 7-month-old infants. In the first experiment, adults were familiarized with and asked to memorize sequences of adjacent syllables that alternated in either pitch or duration. During the test phase, participants heard pairs of syllables with constant pitch and duration and...

Effect of the consonant-vowel structure of written words in Italian.

Surprisingly little is known about the nature of intermediary sublexical units in visual word recognition in Italian, a language with a highly consistent print-to-sound mapping, which should enhance reliance on grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences. In the present study, we examined whether Italian readers are sensitive to large orthographic units defined by the consonant-vowel (CV) pattern of wo...

Selection and coordination: The articulatory basis for the emergence of phonological structure

Phonological theories commonly analyze speech utterances as composed of hierarchically organized units, such as features/gestures, segments, moras, and syllables, but it is not well understood why this hierarchical organization is observed. Moreover, current phonological theories and speech production models fail to explain cross-linguistic and developmental variation in the organization of uni...

Amodal Aspects of Linguistic Design

All spoken languages encode syllables and constrain their internal structure. But whether these restrictions concern the design of the language system, broadly, or speech, specifically, remains unknown. To address this question, here, we gauge the structure of signed syllables in American Sign Language (ASL). Like spoken languages, signed syllables must exhibit a single sonority/energy peak (i....

Characterizing Neural Entrainment to Hierarchical Linguistic Units using Electroencephalography (EEG)

To understand speech, listeners have to combine the words they hear into phrases and sentences. Recent magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electrocorticography (ECoG) studies show that cortical activity is concurrently entrained/synchronized to the rhythms of multiple levels of linguistic units including words, phrases, and sentences. Here we investigate whether this phenomenon can be observed usi...

Chebanov Law and Vakar Formula in Mathematical Models of Complex Systems

Ecological models written in a mathematical language L(M) or model language, with a given style or methodology can be considered as a text. It is possible to apply statistical linguistic laws and the experimental results demonstrate that the behaviour of a mathematical model is the same of any literary text of any natural language. A text has the following characteristics: a) the variables, its...
